Since April 2016 it is law for the keeper of a dog to keep their address details up to date, failure to comply could result in a £500.00 fine. Your address and pet details must be registered along with your microchip number on an approved pet microchip database, such as Animal Tracker.

A microchip is recommended by the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and many other organisations as an effective way of permanently linking pets to their owners, increasing the chances of them being reunited if the animal is lost, stolen or strays.

Thousands of pets are lost every year and many are never reunited with their owners. We believe that microchipping is the most effective way of identifying a lost pet, chips don't come off like collars. Animal Tracker Microchips are designed to last for the life of a dog. They do not need to be charged or replaced.

How does microchipping work?

Once an animal has been microchipped with an Animal Tracker Microchip it has its own unique code number rather like an invisible barcode. The owner's details and the code are stored securely in the Animal Tracker database. When a lost or stolen animal is found, the code will be revealed by passing a scanner over the microchip. Then it's just a matter of matching the code with the database record.

Is microchipping easy to do?

Yes, it's as simple as an injection. A tiny microchip the size of a grain of rice is painlessly inserted under the animal's skin. Once in, the microchip is not visible, but can be read by the scanner.

We use PEDDYMARK microchips which are registered with ANIMAL TRACKER database.

The cost is £15 per animal which includes online registration with animal tracker.

If you are planning on breeding from your bitch, then measuring progesterone levels is an easy and reliable way of gauging the optimum time to mate. It will also give you a more accurate assessment of when your dog is likely to whelp than mating date because we have a good idea of when ovulation has occurred.

The ideal time to mate is 48hrs after ovulation after progesterone levels rise to around 20 mmol/L which we can accurately measure to the same standard as an external veterinary laboratory. The test involves taking a small blood sample and we recommend starting this on around day 7 after the start of the season (vulval swelling and bleeding). We can obtain the results within the hour* and they will indicate what steps are required over the next 2-4 days depending on the result (when to retest or when to mate).

The cost of the test is only £50 and includes an appointment to take the blood, the test itself and interpretation of the results to advise you on the next steps required.

Once you have mated your bitch, you mate want to take advantage of our pregnancy ultrasound scanning service to confirm that the mating has been successful and benefit from other useful information regarding your dog's maternity.

In-depth scan giving you the number of puppies seen (but not guaranteed unless at least 4 weeks pregnant).

Health of puppies growing.  I look at the fluid around the pups, heartbeats, size and movement (if more than 5 weeks pregnant).

Maternal health scan – sometimes puppies can be reabsorbed making you unsure if your bitch is still pregnant. A further scan can reassure you what is happening if you have concerns.

At this appointment I can give you lots of information on whelping and rearing if required.

A 30-minute appointment which includes the scan (which you are able to film or take photos) is only £30 if you have had the progesterone test performed on your dog.

If you haven’t had the benefit of this test then the scan is £40.

Deafness at birth (known as congenital deafness) is often inherited in some breeds. How this condition is inherited is not fully understood but is believed to be controlled by many different genes, possibly with additional breed-specific risk factors.

The BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test is used to check the hearing of a dog. The test checks if the brain responds to noise (usually a clicking sound) and is a reliable way to see if a dog is deaf and to what extent. The test does not measure the full range of a dog's hearing, it only checks noises in the normal human range (some dogs will test as ‘deaf’ but can still hear very high-pitched noises).

Congenital deafness is recognised as a problem in dog breeds that carry the extreme piebald gene, i.e. those with a mostly white coat, deafness is also prominent with the gene that causes the merle coat colour (mottled patches of colour in a solid or piebald coat, blue or odd-coloured eyes.

BAER testing is the standard method to test for deafness of one or both ears in dogs and cats. BAER stands for brainstem auditory evoked response. The test typically takes only a few minutes and is performed without sedation.

The best age to test a litter is around 5½ to 6½ weeks of age (ear canals don’t open until puppies are about 2 weeks old). The test can be carried out at any age after this, including on adult dogs.

Many breeders wish to know the hearing status of their pups before they go to their new homes. Also, at this age, puppies have an active period followed by a period of sleep, which is the perfect time to carry out the test.

The cost of Baer testing for your litter is £40 per puppy which includes microchip if required, copy of certificate emailed to you.

If travelling to your home there may be an extra fuel charge but I try to make this minimal by having appointments in the same area on the same day to share the cost.
